Opening 16th November 2017 at 7pm with Activated Falafel Interval

An Exhibition by Dafna Maimon in the framework of UP (Unsustainable Privileges), curated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen and Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung

17th November 2017 – 13th January 2018

In her exhibition “Orient Express” Berlin-based artist Dafna Maimon, who grew up in Helsinki, Finland, with an Israeli father and a Finish mother, re-establishes the interior of her father’s Kebab and Falafel restaurant, “Orient Express”. In the 1980s it has been the first restaurant of its kind in Helsinki. In Maimon’s exhibition the restaurant installation combined with a “Falafel Interval” performance, a reworked advertising film, a performance documentary, as well as slogans and autobiographical texts are placed in the space of Galerie Wedding. Only at the opening and with irregular frequency the restaurant serves food. Here a falafel can be acquired by hungry audience members and the serving will be part of the performance. Apart from these live moments, the exhibition stages the closing of the restaurant again and again. Apologetic audio announcements that the restaurant is closed are repetitiously made in the exhibition.
