Ballett of the Staatstheaters am Gärtnerplatz

Athi-Patra Ruga

Opulent images, sensuous and exciting themes and highly expressive devotion to motion and dance – the Ballet of Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz under the direction of its director Karl Alfred Schreiner is given over to all these objectives.
Since the founding of the then Actien-Volkstheater on Gärtnerplatz in 1865, ballet has been an integral part of the ensemble and in the course of its varied history crucially left its mark on its artistic profile. Famous ballet directors of the Gärtnerplatz-Theater company included Werner Stammer, Günter Pick, Ivan Sertic and Philip Taylor and Hans-Henning Paar. Since the 2012/2013 season Karl Alfred Schreiner has been artistic director of the Ballet of Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. The ballet of Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz stands for contemporary dance: in the centre of the dance company’s artistic work is the development and perfecting of a directly moving and dynamically powerful dance idiom which has created a new form of expression on the basis of classical motion repertoires. Numerous premieres (including »memento mori« with choreography by Edward Clug and Karl Alfred Schreiner, »Arsen – A Rococo Thriller« choreographed by Jo Strømgren, »Hattrick« with choreography by Jo Strømgren, Marco Goecke, Jacopo Godani and »Peter Pan« by Emanuele Soavi with the score by Han Otten) testify to the enthusiasm of 20 dancers for the undiscovered, with the innovative dance soap »Minutemade« testifying to the fascination with experimenting and improvising. In addition, the ensemble also pays tribute to the great masterpieces of dance repertory like Tchaikovsky’s »Sleeping Beauty« or Richard Strauss’s »Schlagobers« (choreography by Karl Alfred Schreiner) but also with works that have since become modern classics like the choreography »One Flat Thing, reproduced« by WIlliam Forsythe. The ballet at Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz regularly collaborates with internationally renowned guest choreographers. Among others, Jo Strømgren, Georg Reischl, Mauro Astolfi, Emanuele Soavi, Alexander Ekman, Marco Goecke, Antony Rizzi, Nanine Linning, Marguerite Donlon, Erna Ómarsdóttir, Jacopo Godani and Allison Browne have all created choreographic scores for the company.
