An embracing festival begins with a dignified reception: the artistic festival team has commissioned Hamburg director Mable Preach to stage a brilliant opening evening that expresses the spirit of community, participation and inclusion – and at the same time represents a multiplicity of voices, perspectives and actors, both from the Hamburg cultural scene and from the networks of the international festival artists, who in this way enter into a mutual relationship as hosts. The artistic structure of the evening is based on the principle of the “houses” of the voguing ballroom scene with its origins in New York in the 1960s, which offer their members a family network outside their biological family of origin, to which they often have no or a poor relationship due to their queerness. With the various “houses”, the HAUS-PARTY enables different performers to have artistic encounters and the audience to gain first insights into the aesthetic diversity of the festival interdisciplinary, multimedia and spectacular.

In this show, the artist used to travel to someone‘s home and to sing for them naked in exchange for a meal. The performance can be seen as a response to the pandemic context that revealed the fragility of our cultural rituals. It proposes to reduce cultural exchanges to their bare essentials, to replace proximity with intimacy, and to transform our vulnerability into the basis for both emotional and ethical encounters. Simultaneously, it is an attempt to disrupt the commodification of culture in a Western context by going back to a traditional form of exchange that makes away with money: food in exchange for a performance, a practice that is still active in rural Laos, where Vanasay’s father was born. A radical attempt at a different economy and ecology of culture. For the festival the work will be shown as performance installation at Kampnagel.

L’ INVOCATION À L A MUSE stages a poet suffering from writer’s block who calls on the muses for help to improvise a poem for the audience. But instead of the ancient deities, a queer muse appears. Since antiquity, the figure of the muse has been a projection screen for a sexist, white, slightly eroticised understanding of artistic creation. But the history of the arts, the diversity of artistic processes and of the artists themselves and the diversity of their experiences has proven time and again that this concept must give way to new representations.
