In this show, the artist used to travel to someone‘s home and to sing for them naked in exchange for a meal. The performance can be seen as a response to the pandemic context that revealed the fragility of our cultural rituals. It proposes to reduce cultural exchanges to their bare essentials, to replace proximity with intimacy, and to transform our vulnerability into the basis for both emotional and ethical encounters. Simultaneously, it is an attempt to disrupt the commodification of culture in a Western context by going back to a traditional form of exchange that makes away with money: food in exchange for a performance, a practice that is still active in rural Laos, where Vanasay’s father was born. A radical attempt at a different economy and ecology of culture.
