#PERFORMANCE
The renowned singer-songwriter Safia Nolin from Québec, known for her unique voice, has joined forces with director Philippe Cyr to transform thousands of hateful online comments directed at Nolin into a powerful musical performance. The work explores the mechanisms of public condemnation as well as the power of artistic self-empowerment.
SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE (“Watched and Punished”) raises the urgent question of what freedom of expression means when it turns into hatred and violence. At the centre of the performance is Safia Nolin herself, confronted by a large chorus reciting the collected hate comments directed at her. Carried by music and the force of the collective voice, the hostile dynamics are gradually reversed.
What begins as a public attack becomes an act of reclaiming voice, visibility, and space. SURVEILLÉE ET PUNIE is a powerful reflection on the violence of words and, at the same time, a moving tribute to the ability of art to transform hatred into community, solidarity, and agency.
