The Pantsula subculture emerged in the Sophiatown district of Johannesburg during the violent expulsion of black people during the apartheid era. It became a common expression and identity that united the country‘s elevenethnic groups. The dance style isiPantsula developed from traditional dances and theatrical gestures of daily life and was used as a means of communication during the demonstrations.
